Of particular importance for Sikelianos was the role of poetry and of the poet in the ancient tradition that influenced him most. It was something of the same role that he himself aspired to fill in modern Greece: the poet standing in the center of his world as inspired profet and seer, teacher and mystagogue. Sikelianos considered Pindar and Aeschylus to be two poets of ancient Greece who best fulffiled this definition of the poet's role. And they fulfilled it through their use of myth, myth understood not as rhetorical or metaphorical device but as a spontaneous creation of the human soul directed toward the revelation of hidden spiritual life.
