— Come up, Kinch! Come up, you fearful jesuit!

In the field of Latin grammar it was a Portuguese from Madeira who gave Europe one of [her] most widely used schoolbooks, viz. the three books De Institutione grammatica (1572) of the Jesuit Emmanuel Alvarez (1526-1582). This book was adopted for use in the schools by the Jesuit Ratio Studiorum and was not abandoned before the late 19th century: it was still used by James Joyce (1882-1941).
